Rusted – Texture Study B

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

As I probably tended to go on a bit about on my old site, I’m a huge fan of how things change over time and also taking the time to document them in my short passage on the face of the earth.

Bennion Beach has been a very happy photographic hunting ground for me ever since I moved to Perth and it’s nice to know that nothing has changed.  A trip there  a couple of weekends ago to watch a somewhat lack lustre sunset (it looked promising with smoke hanging in the air) was still saved by the immeasurable beauty of this part of the coastline including the occasional rusty pole.  Some more images from this trip will follow over the next few days.

Whispers

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Part of the Kings Park War Memorial is a 180° semi circle that includes inscriptions of many of the theatres of wars that Australian soldiers fought in.

One of the other aspects of the wall is its wonderful ability to transfer sound.  Due to the delightful laws of physics, a person can sit at each end and simply by speaking under their breath easily relay messages to the other person without anyone outside hearing.  Unless, of course, they choose to sit in the middle of you!

Paw

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The deliciously Western Australia Kangaroo Paw commands the centre of attention in a sea of planted colour in one of the Kings Park’s wildflower gardens.

Spotted

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Reeds from around the ‘water gardens’ in Kings Park exude a glorious mix of spotted patterns and straw colouring.

Mosaic in Tuart Park

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

One of the beautiful things about Kings Park is the wide open spaces nestled in the 400+ hectares of land.  On the fringes of many of the parks they have some excellent places to sit and wile away an afternoon.  There’s also usually some nice artwork to boot.

Boab overlooking South Perth

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

A couple of smaller boabs sit high on on the Mount Eliza escarpment looking south towards South Perth and Melville Water.  They are surrounding the larger boab transfered to Kings Park late last year.

Settled

A juvenile seagull hunkers down to begin a preening regime on the shoreline of Lake Monger.  Many young seagulls are following their parents around this time of the year learning how to trick your mate out of a chip and the best angle of inclination with which to dive bomb a car windscreen.  They make such a quiet squeak; quite in contrast to their older, surlier brethren.

Landed

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

A corella steels itself to land into a willow tree to join his friends late in the afternoon on the shores of Lake Monger.  The birds are truly ‘in season’ around the lake at the moment and put on a fantastic show.  A few days ago some friends and I were at the lake for a a barbeque and one bird was on the ground playing with a stick and rolling around as a dog would.  Great fun to watch!

While the cream of the crop comes to this site, the ‘still pretty good’ images from this Lake Monger photo shoot have been posted up on my other blog.  I like to create a back story to each of the series where possible and also to put together a more comprehensive selection of images , whereas this site generally focuses on a single image a day.

The absolute best images will for now remain site unseen until they’re included in some of the upcoming ‘series’ which will be put on this site.

Cheeky

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Not quite the ‘chorus of corellas‘ that Darren Hanlon experienced in Manilla, NSW, but there was still a partially deafening cacophany of birds playing and nesting in trees on the shores of Lake Monger.  The birds seem to have also taken up home in a tree about 100 metres from my house which is equal parts wonderful and squawking!

Texture study A

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

A study for a series I have in mind focusing on textures, both natural and man made.  This one comes from one of the many beautiful trees on the shore of Lake Monger, just north of the Perth CBD.
